The Real Retreat Isn’t In Bali

Read time: 2 minutes

"Of course this would happen to me."

We’ve all said it.

Maybe not out loud. Maybe just under your breath.

But you’ve felt that quiet frustration when Life throws another unexpected curveball.

The moment plans go sideways. The tension rises. The emotions stir.

And suddenly, the story starts writing itself in your mind:

  • “That’s just my luck.”

  • “Why does this always happen to me?”

  • “Things have always gone bad for me my whole Life”

But here’s the truth most people never stop to question:

What if nothing is wrong with you?

Not now. Not ever.

What if you’ve just been repeating a story you learned a long time ago—without ever realizing it?

Because here’s what’s real:

Life will test you. Even in the seasons that are supposed to feel good.

Spring will come—but so will uncertainty.

The sun will shine—but stress will still knock at your door.

You can be grateful—and still have moments of doubt.

And yet… you still get to choose. You get to choose how you respond. You get to choose what kind of person you become when it gets hard.

You get to choose whether you become smaller—or stronger.

You don’t need to fix anything.

You just need to stop believing the lie that something is.... broken.

Because it’s in the hardest moments that your being matters most.

  • Not when things are easy.

  • Not when you’re in a great mood.

  • But when you’re stretched, stressed, uncertain, reactive.

That’s when the real work begins.

And that’s why I’ve built a daily habit of sitting with myself.

Journaling, meditation, quiet walks. Not to escape—but to return.

Because the best retreat? Isn’t out there. It’s in here.

It’s the stillness you create for yourself.

It’s the calm you cultivate before the chaos comes.

It’s the practice of choosing—again and again—to be the person you want to be.

“Yeah, but that just sounds idealistic. Like it’s easy to say when things are going well.”

You’re right—this isn’t about ignoring reality.

And it’s not about toxic positivity.

It's about building the kind of inner stability that doesn’t fall apart because of reality.

Choosing how you respond isn’t naive. It’s powerful. And it’s available to you—right now.

And maybe now you're thinking:

“Well, that’s easy for you to say. You’re a coach. You’ve done the work.”

Let me tell you...

I’m not saying this from the mountaintop.

I’m saying it from the middle.

Because honestly, there are days I forget. Days I default. Days I react.

But the difference is—I come back. Again and again.

Because I’ve learned:

The moment I start telling the old stories, I give away my power. And the moment I remember who I choose to be—I rightfully take it back.

So if today feels heavy…

If the week didn’t go as planned…

If you’ve caught yourself saying “that’s just who I am”…

Let this be your reminder:

You are not your reaction. You are your response.

After all, it's your response-ability.

And you get to choose it—starting now.

Happy Saturday.

Much Love,

Julian

PS. Don't forget to smile, my friend. Smiling is free.
