What Will They Say About You When You’re Gone?
Read time: 4 minutes
Life can be meaningless.
Especially when we don't slow down.
When every day feels the same.
We run on empty moving from one thing to the next.
Every task we do is just a means to an end.
And frankly, how sad is that.
Your short Life on this Earth wasn't meant for that.
You weren't brought here to sit around all day.
You weren't brought here to remain comfortable.
You weren't brought here to let fear run the show.
How do I know?
Well, I relate.
I used to be right there myself.
Not that long ago actually.
I was running from one thing to the next every single day. I could physically feel the stress this was causing on my body as my neck & shoulders were in constant pain.
So much so I practically visited every single physiotherapist in my city.
Why did I go to so many?
Because none were able to help me out.
At first, I thought maybe it was them. But — when not a single person is able to help you, it may be a sign to look in the mirror.
And that was the case for me.
When I finally stopped planning my next steps in my head and truly listened to what they were each saying, it hit me...
"You need to learn to be more mindful. To slow down."
For my entire Life, I was running on autopilot.
Thinking the same thoughts
Feeling the same emotions
Doing the same actions
And when this becomes your reality for a long time — it also ends up becoming just who you are.
The interesting part is that the signs were there all along.
I just wasn't paying attention.
Another by-product of not slowing down.
Looking back on those days, I realize how much of Life’s beauty I was missing.
I wasn't allowing myself to stop & smell the roses.
Everything in and around me felt meaningless. Every book I read, workout I completed, or conversation I had seemed like something to get through just so I could move on to the next task.
My Life was essentially just a bunch of to-dos waiting to be checked off.
Now, how depressing is that?
Be real. Nobody wants that.
Nobody wants their obituary to read "Known for checking off the most to-dos in the history of task-setting!"....
Every single one of us has a purpose. And Life happening to you isn't one of them.
You were placed here on this Earth to make Life work for you.
This Life is the most beautiful & precious thing we have.
It's the only one you will ever have, too.
So if the thought of your family reading that about you at your funeral scares you — as it did for me — then listen up.
There's still time. It's never too late.
Your biological age isn't relevant here.
I've worked with people approaching their 60s who've had more transformational experiences than some other 20-year-olds I know.
Age doesn't matter.
What matters is what you do with your age. Meaning with your time.
The experiences you go through.
The data you collect daily.
The impact you make.
That's what makes up a meaningful and purpose-driven Life.
What does "impact" look like?
It's different for each and every single one of us.
As I said, you were put on this Earth to fulfill a mission.
Whatever that may be.
For some that could be leading a Life dedicated to serving & guiding others.
For others that may be entertaining the world through Art.
The possibilities are endless.
But guess what isn't?
Your Life.
Therefore, to discover your mission, you have to experiment, take risks, and lean into the unknown.
How to know if you're moving in the right direction?
You feel and experience one or more of the following:
Fear
Doubt
Failure
Discomfort
Uncertainty
To list a few...
Though uncomfortable & undesired at first, these experiences are exactly what you need to move closer to fulfilling your mission.
Do not underestimate it, my friends.
Trust me, you do not want to look back & realize how much more you could've done.
Nobody loves living in regret.
Even studies have shown that one of the biggest regrets of the dying is “not taking control of their Life sooner.”
My intention here is to scare you.
Is it working?
A little stress and fear is exactly what you need right now.
That's exactly what got me up and kept me running when I was at my lowest.
If it weren’t for this mental image of what would've happened if I hadn't changed anything at that moment... I don't even know where I'd be right now.
Therefore, if you're stuck in any shape or form — I advise you to sit down all alone. With a pen and paper.
And write down all the things you don’t want to happen — but might — if you don’t take intentional action right now.
Be vivid. Detailed. Super specific.
And most importantly — be honest.
Let this image of your anti-vision drive your daily actions.
Every time you want to do something that deep down you know isn't productive nor helpful for the Life you actually want for yourself — remember this image of your anti-vision.
My biggest tip?
Print out pictures of your anti-vision (& carry it with you everywhere).
Stuff like:
The negative bank statement.
The unhealthy, out-of-shape body.
The loneliness & lack of meaningful relationships.
(these are just a few of mine)
This, most definitely, will get you out of bed with no problem.
At least, it worked like a charm for me.
Since then, I've been living my dream Life:
Coaching CEOs, entrepreneurs, & business owners
Flying across the world to give motivational speeches
Choosing when, where, and whom to work with every day
Which now, I'm proud to say, is no longer a dream.
But a true reality.
All it took was some intentional fear & discomfort, and a continual set of actions that I took every single day regardless of my mood.
Then, one day, you'll notice how it no longer takes much effort to do the things that at first felt foreign and scary.
Now, they're things you just do.
A part of who you are.
For me, that was the ultimate aim.
I sincerely hope you get to that place too.
Thank you for reading.
Much Love,
Julian
